This model kit is great for young collectors, not top notch, but it is a very neat kit. The diagram of how to build it is black in white so you might have some trouble reading it but it is readable. The pieces have some trouble snapping together, but the screws are very well made and fit in there whole well. Also, the plane has some trouble balancing on the stand but don't be worried when it rocks side-to-side a bit because it is just find it's comfortable position. If you are wondering how the pieces stick together there are 11 screws, and grooves where all the pieces are supposed to fit. There is no glue so no mess will be created. The kit comes with all the supplies you need, like screwdriver, screws and any thing else you need to construct it. My daughter is only three but is fascinated with tools and screwdrivers especially. This is made for a slightly older child but it has worked out really well as family time together as my husband or I have to sit down with her and help her figure out how the shapes fit together and what goes where... and to make sure the pieces didn't go rolling off of the table. The little booklet of ideas is awesome and inspires her to keep pulling out the toy to build something new. Some of the examples in the booklet are a little misleading, we had a little trouble figuring out the sequence of pieces as it only shows a finished structure, not how to get there and then occasionally the pieces didn't quite fit so we improvised, which is a great learning tool though I don't think it was meant that way. My daughter does all of the screwing with each tool by herself so it has been great for her motor skills and also her problem solving as to what piece should get put on next and following a pattern. My only suggestion to the company is to make the holes in the flat pieces all standardized, so that it provides the greatest flexibility on where to place a bolt or screw, we've found that many times we can't quite create what we want because we don't have a hole to use. Our personal experience kids at time of purchase 4.5 and 2.25. Both seem to be into it obviously the oldest actually building things and the youngest "modifying" the oldest.

I recommend this set specifically over the smaller cheaper sets because it has distinct pieces. We ended up buying the 750 pc set after buying this one. With that set we can make all the other sets pretty much using some ingenuity.

I gave durability only a 3 because you do have to be careful disassembling it. you have to make it tight to get the flat pieces to stay, and then taking apart is hard especially triangular configurations which are very common, planes, race cars, forklifts, carousels.

I am another one of those reviewers who probably loves this even more than my toddler. (And she enjoys it quite a bit!) My 2 year old and I love stocking the shelves of the little store and talking about the things we find in our own grocery store. DD pushes the cash register a lot to make it ding, but it isn't overly annoying. (And it's quiet compared to other toys.) The novelty of pushing it continuously wore off after a week and she got down to enjoying the rest of the set more anyway. (I'm actually happy that we can replace the battery on it when it inevitably wears out.) My daughter's favorite parts are the flowers, the clear blue window blocks and the shelf doors that open and close. She's always putting little figures from other toys into the tiny space. Overall, I'd say this get a lot of play and has great learning potential as we discus the supermarket and count items. I bought this set because my son had tried it at school. My kids immediately started on a project when they received the set but couldn't finish because they ran out of straws. I couldn't believe that there weren't enough straws so I counted. Sure enough, we were quite a few straws short. But, Roylco is a great company to work with. The woman I spoke to was pleasant and professional and rushed us out plenty of straws (and some extra connectors). She also followed up with an e-mail to make sure we had received the package and were enjoying the set! I am very pleased with my purchase. My kids love to create with the straws and connectors and use their imaginations. My only complaint would be that their creations don't stay together very well--the straws and connectors slide apart fairly easily. We purchased these blocks to replace ones that were very worn out in our church's preschool department. These are the "real" blocks. Very sturdy, very easy to assemble. The cardboard is quite thick. In order to replace all the blocks we had to toss, we ordered from four different companies to get different sizes, shapes, etc. These were by far the best quality (thickest cardboard) and ordering from Joe's was by far the least expensive way to get the quantity of large blocks we needed. Shipping was very fast and customer service was excellent. A bit of advice for anyone ordering cardboard blocks - after you assemble them, wrap them in contact paper to make them last longer.
