The Desktop Onager: An Awesome all Wood and Twine War Machine

I just received the desktop onager but have not put it together since it will be a gift for my teenage son at Christmas. I'm writing this review to let you know just how it arrives and what is in the box.
Hurray, it arrived quickly! Nicely boxed in a standard carton but not over packaged with bright header or plastic packaging, just the parts you need in the cardboard box complete with saw dust from milling. The pieces are pre-cut with a die onto what looks like poplar, not oak as pictured. They are not cut all the way through the wood so need to be scored, broken away and sanded. These are not Tinkertoys you do have a bit of work involved but that's all part of the process. Some items are prepared in advance such as the balls, leather pad etc. The instructions are printed in color with clear photos and directions.

I hope it proves to be a sturdy item, it looks like good old fashioned fun with hard wood pieces. If you enjoy the idea of simple wooden toys, are not put off by the lack of flashy packaging and like the thought of buying from a small US company then I think it is worth your while.

But, we simply did not find that building a connecting structure like in the picture was remotely possible without a lot of patience and trial and error. The worst of it was that it DID NOT COME WITH ANY INSTRUCTIONS!! We returned it to Amazon.com after two attempts to have fun with it. My son played with a similar toy at his after school center, but the tubes were in longer sections and they were super easy to snap together so he and others could create elaborate connections for the marbles to run on, if I can find that kind, I would buy it. I haven't built a model in about 30 years, and decided to spend some quiet time at night getting back into the hobby. This Revell model has been on my shelf for many years. I'm almost done with it, and am really enjoying putting it together.

I've read another comment about poor fit, but I've not had any problems at all in that regard. Actually, I find the opposite, all of the parts have great detail, a nice fit, and are very well molded. The quality of the detail is very nice, Revell's craftsmanship seems high quality to me. For example, Revell took great pains to include very precise interior details inside the nose section of the wheel well, also inside the bottom of the wing wheel wells - something that almost nobody would see if the plane is mounted on a static ground display - but the model builder sees it!

A minor point, the drawing on the box cover shows the plane in flight, however the model comes as a static display (like the picture you see with canopy open, etc.). I had thought I'd have the option of either building it as in-flight, or on the tarmac, but apparently not.

I would highly recommend this model to any other intermediate builder out there. I do agree with the other reviewer that it's leaning toward being more an advanced build, potentially deserving a 3 instead of a 2 for difficulty level. That's because the parts are detailed, finely fit and need precise glue technique so the details on the parts are not ruined.

So in conclusion, this is not a good starter model for my 9 year old grandson - but for older and/or more patient modelers this Revell kit will provide you with many hours of fun model building, as it is for me.Get more detail about Revell 1:48 A10 Warthog.

I bought this model few weeks ago and started to assemble as soon as I got it. The model broke into pieces when I opened the box...this means that you have to figure out which tiny pieces should go where by yourself, and might miss some parts. When you finally assemble your model and find that there is a missing part, that would be very annoying. The bottom parts of the ship hardly fit together, I used a lot of cement.

I have some collection of models with different brand since I was a child. I can say that this one is really not worth money. Spend 10 or few more dollars and buy a better one like Trumpeter Model. I have a Trumpeter USS Yorktown and its so good. At the very least, the box is rigid, so that shipping won't damage your model. Also, they wrap the parts separately and carefully, and there is even a small box to put in model planes. While it comes with accessories to help in the displaying of smaller gundam models, I find that this particular stand is to larger and would over power the focus for anything smaller then a 1/100 or master grade scale gundam.
