lego is expensive. and this box has 1695 pieces so it is very expensive. but i'm really really glad i bought it. what makes this box so cool is the fantastic selection of "specialty" pieces that it includes. 4 sets of wheels and tires, trees, flowers, windows, doors, handles, windshields, steering wheels, many translucent pieces, five (i think) people, lamp posts (non-working), pieces with eyes and mouths (both smiling and frowning), chains, ladders, poles, a trailer hitch, even a pair of jet engines! there are even pieces i haven't figured out what to do with yet! and it all comes in a big blue plastic box.

My 2 year old daughter received this Duplo set for her birthday. Overall it's a nice set with a lot of pieces, but it all depends on what you're wanting to do with Legos. Do you want to build? Or play matching games? Do you already own a whole slew of Legos and now you're looking for some novelty pieces? If so, then this set would definitely fit the bill.

This set is great for novelty pieces, like the double-decker four peg pieces which each have a number or corresponding number of items. They would be great fun for playing little number games with (my daughter is still a little on the young side of this, but this may be neat later). This set also contains one cute little person who can be made to attach standing, or laying, or sitting on any Lego piece, and his pal, a dalmation dog. My daughter loves the dog. There is a single window, and a little standard Lego car. The white fence is a great novelty piece too.

The problem with this set (or advantage depending on your perspective) is that there are too many novelty pieces, and too few basic building pieces. This set is sorely lacking in the rectangular pieces which are so necessary to building just about any structure. The novelty pieces are pretty cool, and I imagine as we amass more basic Lego bricks, we'll have a whole new appreciation for the novelty pieces, but the bottom line is that if you are wanting a building set, I would start with something more basic than this.

I think one area in which Lego has gone astray is in adding too much to a lot of their sets in an effort to make them more educational, or less centered on the classic (boring?) building aspect of Legos, which was/is in fact the most educational part anyway. And besides building is fun. That said, I think this set does sit comfortably astride the line between overkill in that department and being just simple enough to have multiple practical uses.

For anyone new to Legos, or who is balking at the $25 price tag, I think it is worth mentioning that the ABS plastic used by Lego is quite safe and durable, and that many basic Lego bricks are still manufactured in European countries, which is pretty outstanding when you consider how big the company is. That, of course, is another reason to stick to basic block sets. All sets that have the more fancy pieces are going to contain parts manufactured in China, and this set is no exception. I think the countries listed on the back of the box were China, Mexico, Hungary and Germany, if memory serves. However, of China-made toys, Lego has one of the cleanest records of all those tested with XRF technology by the Ecology Center - which is better than could be said of a lot of toy companies. Bottom line: I think you can have a bit more faith in the integrity of Legos than of a lot of toys on the market. But that's just my opinion.

Anyway, I wouldn't necessarily pass up this set. The possibility for games with numbers is cool, the novel pieces are nice, and there are a few basics like the car, but I would recommend at least one basic Duplo block set and a large baseplate being in your collection before adding this one.Get more detail about LEGO Duplo Learning (5497).

My 2 year old daughter has had these for about a year now and she still loves them and plays with them every single day!

I love them because they're large enough so you don't lose them and small enough for her little hands.

It comes with postcard sized cards with some building designs on each one, which is pretty cool.

She loves stacking them as high as she can get them all by herself - which is usually close to 4 feet tall!!!! (They are quite sturdy!)

She has even decided some of the bloks are bath toys too.

Good amount of blocks for one infant/toddler, though I am hoping to get some more so she can go nuts with them over the next few years. Cheap LEGO City Crawler Crane (7632)

Lego should probably not label this kit as being appropriate for age 5; our 9-year-old was able to build it mostly independently, but required help a couple of times. For instance, it is especially tricky to attach the "cable" (thread supplied with kit) to the take-up reel, thread it through the pulley, and anchor it on the crane arm. As with most Lego toys, it's important that every assembly point be pressed tightly together, and for little hands that can be tricky sometimes.

We've only had it assembled for a day so far, and although the pulley works as advertised to lift things, and the crawler treads do move as expected, the whole thing is not quite as solid as some other Lego toys. It's obvious that hand-cranking a pulley will put an unusually high amount of torque on the unit, and eventually the operator will end up with a handful of Lego pieces needing to be reassembled.

To some extent, that goes with the territory with Lego toys, of course. You have to decide whether you're more interested seeing a big complex thing come together out of many small parts, which is educational and fun; or in actually trying to play with it as a genuine building and construction toy. For the latter purpose, most kids are better off with prebuilt trucks, cranes, or whatever. For instance, we still have old "Bob the Builder" (non-Lego!) toys that work just fine despite being tossed around, kicked, stepped on, etc. Smaller kids might be better off with that kind of toy for everyday play.

Once it is completely built, the crawler crane is a pretty imposing size, larger than most of the other vehicles and toys in the "City" series. And when you're done playing for the day, where do you put it? Ha. We had bought a few small storage bins (similar in size to a typical Lego tub) to store other assembled Lego toys, and found that to be really valuable for a front-end loader, dump truck, etc.

Well, this crane is way bigger than that. We also got a bigger plastic box (intended for storing shirts) -- but discovered that the crane is bigger than that, too. Finally we figured out that one can take the big crane arm apart without undoing the cable or anything else, and carefully store it in the box next to the main body of the toy. Next time it is wanted, the arm will simply snap onto four little pegs and it'll be ready to go.

We haven't put this to the test of time of course, but in the first bit of play we noticed that the cab is fairly easy to knock off, for instance. Also, the crawler treads, being hard plastic, are slick and will not move if you're playing on any kind of slick surface -- and that includes the large Lego base plates which are also hard plastic. On a rug or towel or other rough surface, the treads can grip and will turn around their sprockets when you move the vehicle, just as they would on a real crawler crane. So, good design for those treads, but probably wasted in most play environments.

The top part swivels easily, so you can use the crane and pulley to lift an item from one spot, turn and drop it somewhere else. However, note that the crane arm itself can NOT be raised or lowered by any user control (unlike the pulley handle). The arm is mounted on parts that *look like* pneumatic lifts, but they aren't functional.

Still, overall it's a pretty neat toy, and if you want a somewhat complex assembly project without having to go to space (Star Wars) or some other esoteric setting, this fits the bill. Now that it's done, I think we're going to shift now to buying more sets of bricks and letting the kid invent stuff from scratch. As another reviewer noted, it'll be interesting to see if this crane gets modified with other parts by our young designer, after the initial exhilaration wears off.

We paid slightly less than the "list" price on the Lego website, and that is quite a bit less than it's selling for today here on Amazon. When I looked at the finished toy and thought about the cost out-of-pocket, I felt that it was a just barely acceptable deal at list price or less. The Aerial Defense Unit has far and away the best LEGO helicopter ever. Great build and huge on playability, this is a must buy. A very sturdy model so it'll hold up to kid play and AFoL's will love it for the design, build, details and great villian mini-figs.

PRO's - Twin rotating blades. Best feature on the kit and best working piece on a LEGO model in awhile. On the tail you have a lever you push forward against a rubber band that then pushes technique gears to spin the blades. The blades spin at the same speed but alternately so they don't touch. You keep pumping the lever forward and the helicopter's blades spin fast and looks great doing it! Talk about swoosh-a-bility...with the tail built upon a strong technique skeleton and the blades spinning madly, you'll be flying and swooshin' your ship all over the house without fear of pieces falling off. Well built and extremely sturdy model for play.

2-SEAT cockpit with large, great looking canopy. Printed tile control panel.
LEFT and right of cockpit has twin machine guns/cannons.
UNDER each rotor blade are 4 missiles/lasers.
4 LARGE cabin doors which open wide to access interior. Back doors on each side have a computer terminal mounted into the swing arm.
FRONT part of cabin has 2 zip line mounted(tied) to a backpack with clips for guns, binoculars, walky-talky, flashlight, etc.
BACKPACKS attached to Agents armor to repel/ascend from the craft. At times the weight of the mini-fig and backpack attached to the zip-line will pull down the Agent, repeling him into action.
LOCKS(outside left and right) for zip lines.
MID-SECTION column in cabin also has clips for aforementioned tools, equipment, etc.
BACK section cabin has area for a simple but effective jet-ski (holds in place with a simple lock in rear of cabin).
AGENTS Chase and Swift mini-figs with duel faces (Agent Charge single faced) and all have body armor.
GREAT looking Magma Commander (with trans orange head, silver helmet, silver right arm) and 3 Magma-Drones (with silver right arms).

This set also comes with a small/mini-Volcano base lair. Front door (with a nice looking mouth opening with teeth design) opens up and down with simple techniqe lever. Outside left of door is a laser rifle/cannon, left above has a platform with a computer terminal (w/silohette's of Agents helicopter and this base/lair), right above door is a large radar dish which swivels 360degrees (using a technique gear). Interior right has a simple screen/terminal with a countdown-like clock and left is a tilted small mount/platform which you fit in one of the Magma-Drones simulating either a repair bay or a duplication chamber (crankin' out Magma-Drones for the Commander's army).

CON's - None. Some say the little Volcano lair is cheap or silly to add in without more details but it's meant to be a forward radar station for the larger Volcano base (from Agent's first series). I suggest mod'ing this lair as I have(I've added more large stone wall pieces, foliage, detailed interior with computer terminals, added a swiveled throne for the Magma Commander, etc.)

Also for some, a good amount of stickers is a negative and in this case I agree. The helicopter looks better without the Agent's stickers but you gotta' use the computer terminal ones to complete the look for those areas.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting this set. Again, as I've said...this is far and away the best LEGO helicopter ever. This is a great Agent's vehicle and can be used for your Town/City sets as a police helicopter...or rescue helicopter. It's just FANTASTIC!

Legos are timeless...I had the complete set of 'Space Series' when I was a kid in the late '70s...Now my 5 year old adores legos and our time together playing with them.
This particular model caught his eye as a innocent addition to his growing collection, so I thought I'd add it to my order of larger, and what I thought was 'higher priced' sets, most of which I obtained at "less than store prices".
Turns out, this little set that sold in stores for $[...] costs a freakin' fortune online. Between shipping and the ridiculously inflated prices I saw for this item, I paid nearly $13 for it. SAD. I added up the price of the individual pieces that it's made of on the Lego website---added up to less than $4. And I took it the Post Office to assess its shipping cost...yeah, $1.05. Someone needs to stop gouging on small items like this.

This is a smaller bionicle, and with only 19 pieces, took barely a couple of minutes for my lego bionicle nut nephew to put together. But, it's not the building that he most enjoys with the lego bionicles. It's the on-going imagination based play with a character he knows, and collecting the whole bionicle cast he most likes.

Tahu, I'm told is the Toa of Fire, the leader and fiercest of the six taos offered. The entire six (7116 Tahu, 7117 Gresh, 7135 Takanuva, 7136 Skrall, 7137 Piraka and 7138 Rahkshi) were released in early 2010. So, if you're looking for a gift that a bionicle nut you know might not have yet this is a good option.

Of the set, Tahu seems to be the most popular. Each one of the characters comes with a gold piece, which after they're all collected is ultimately placed on Tahu to transform him into a Golden Toa Bionicle (apparently a character that the bionicle-wise know from the movie). Anyway, Tahu, unlike the others, comes with a gold masking shield, to complete his look when his shield is complete. So, he has a bit of extra value.

Because my nephew loves these, I always feel he gets plenty of play value out of them for less than than the nine dollars they normally cost. (TIP: As always, with Lego's, it's best to shop around since prices can vary so dramatically.).

I bought this one for him along with LEGO Takanuva (7135), who's also one of the more popular characters, and it made it an even better surprise gift.

I personally don't play with this toy, but my son is a huge fan of the Bionicle toy line, and he's been collecting the individual Bionicles for the last year. This might be an excellent toy for a child with Aspergers syndrome. There are a very limited number of things you can do with it, mostly spinning gears that can make some limited geometric contructions built on special pieces spin. My six year old daughter did not like it paticularly, and played with it for less than an hour. She definitely likes the regularly Magnext.

The battery powered motor unit (the puck looking item) is weak. However, the pieces do work with regular Magnext, and a clever child can do some interesting things, i.e. a set of propellers, etc. using this set. Definitely NOT worth full price, but the pieces are worth about $10 or so for an advanced builder. My son is a paper airplane nut, so he had to have this kit. Unfortunately, after the better part of the afternoon we've been unable to get the launcher built. The motors need to be inserted into two circular holes on the plastic base, and are very difficult to push through. Lots of force is required (much more than my 10 year old is capable of exerting), and the delicate wire connections on the motors are getting all bent up. The instructions suggest lubricating the motors with dish soap to facilitate the process, but in our case it didn't help. I've tried enlarging the holes with sandpaper, but again, without luck. At the moment my fingers are bruised and sore and my son is disappointed. My son has Aspergers and this toy fits right down his ally. Lego's are to frustration but he needed something more that just duplos and such. This allows him to use his imagination and still be able to makes something that stays together. He can make things by picture or just go with what he is thinking. Some of the pieces are a little tough but that just assures me that it will last for awhile until he is ready to do something else. I am just so happy that Fisher price came up with this product we have been looking for something for some time for a 4 year old and my 3 year old that meets them where they are at but still allows for them to grow. and the stages are great and I absolutely love they can all be combined and work together.
